What Is VA Aid & Attendance?

VA Aid & Attendance is an enhanced pension benefit paid by the Department of Veterans Affairs to eligible wartime veterans and their surviving spouses who need help with activities of daily living — bathing, dressing, eating, medication management, or getting in and out of bed.

It can be used to pay for home care, assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing — and it is tax-free. Despite being one of the most valuable benefits available, most families have never heard of it.

Who Qualifies?

• Served during a wartime period (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, etc.)
• Received an honorable or general discharge
• Currently needs help with daily activities — or lives in a care facility
• Income and assets within VA limits (care costs reduce countable income significantly)
• Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans may also be eligible
